What Does a Cannabis Breeder Actually Do?

The word “breeder” covers a wide range of practices, from a single grower popping seeds in a spare room to a multi-country operation running thousands of plants per generation. The core process is the same regardless of scale. A breeder selects two parent plants with desirable characteristics, crosses them to produce seeds, grows a population of those seeds, evaluates every plant individually for the traits that matter: terpene expression, structure, resin density, effect, yield — then selects the standout individuals. Those selections either become the basis for further crossing, are preserved as clone-only cuts, or are stabilised across multiple generations until the genetics breed true enough to release as seeds.

Jigga — The Origin of Girl Scout Cookies

Jai “Jigga” Chang is the San Francisco breeder who made the cross that changed everything. Around 2007, working out of the Sunset District, he crossed his proprietary “F1 Durb” with a Flo Rida OG Kush and produced Girl Scout Cookies. The cross that most public sources describe as “OG Kush × Durban Poison” was deliberate misdirection. Jigga said as much directly. Those were the stories put out to keep people from copying the work. What is documented is that GSC’s terpene profile, sweet-dough, minty, earthy-citrus, was unlike anything the California market was producing at the time. It wasn’t more potent than what existed. It tasted different from everything that existed, and that difference is what changed the market.

Jigga partnered with Berner (Gilbert Milam Jr.) to launch Cookies Enterprises in 2010. Sherbinski — Sunset Sherbet, Gelato, and the Dessert Era

Mario Guzman, Mr. Sherbinski, did not set out to breed Sunset Sherbet. In 2012, a Pink Panties male left in a room of GSC at his San Francisco grow pollinated the entire crop over a weekend. When he returned on Tuesday, powder was on every plant. He was furious. After his trimmers cleared the dusted crop, he went back through the stem and trim bags and pulled roughly 60 seeds. Those seeds, sprouted in another small garage, became Sunset Sherbet. Two years later, in 2014, Sherbinski and Jigga crossed Sunset Sherbet with Thin Mint Cookies in both directions. The seeds from that project became Gelato. Seed Junky Genetics (JBeezy) — The Most Commercially Influential Breeder of the Modern Era

Anthony Hart (JBeezy) started Seed Junky in a small Southern California garage in the early 2000s. Capulator — The Reclusive Breeder Who Changed the Catalogue

Capulator is a California-based breeder who has been active since the mid-1990s. He does not have a seed bank website. He operated on the cultivation forums where modern cannabis breeding was shaped: the same underground digital spaces where the Cookies family was developed and where Chemdog’s genetics were traded. It took Cannabis Now a full month to track him down for an interview, and he declined to speak by phone, communicating only by email. His influence on the genetics that define the current collector market is disproportionate to his public profile.

What matters for understanding Capulator as a breeder is what the story reveals about his approach: he was not trying to create MAC 1. He was trying to solve a practical growing problem: finding a more vigorous, better-yielding expression of the Alien Cookies F2 #7 mother he had been running for years. Skunk House Genetics (Skunkmasterflex) — The Savoury-Funk Category

Skunkmasterflex operates under the Skunk House Genetics banner and is responsible for the most significant genetics in the savoury-funk category of the modern exotic catalogue. His role in the GMO story is that of a phenotype hunter rather than a cross developer: Mamiko Seeds made the Chemdog D × GSC Forum Cut cross, and Skunkmasterflex grew a pack of those seeds on the ICMag forums, found the phenotype with the garlic-onion volatile sulfur compound character that defines GMO. He named it after a news headline about Girl Scout Cookies biscuits containing GMO ingredients, and preserved it. The December 2017 issue of High Times broke GMO to the mainstream market. Compound Genetics — Flavours by Design

Compound Genetics was founded in 2017 by Chris Lynch, a San Jose-born, Portland-raised breeder who spent two years in Amsterdam in the early 2000s before returning to the US and beginning to breed seriously. The operation started as Tiger Trees in 2016 and rebranded as Compound Genetics in 2017. Archive Seed Bank (ThaDocta) — The Preservationist

Archive Seed Bank was founded by Fletcher Watson (ThaDocta) in the Pacific Northwest, originally conceived in 2006 as an attempt to preserve heirloom, verified original cannabis clones and seed lines. In House Genetics was founded by Branden Bond in Washington state.
